Angela Merkel: Germany is ‘mourning with a heavy heart’

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said authorities will not rest until they find out what led to last night's shooting in Munich.

Nine people were killed and 27 injured by a gunman who later took his own life in an attack at a McDonald's and a shopping centre yesterday.

Police say the shootings are not linked to Islamic State or the recent intake of refugees.

10 of those injured are said to be in a critical condition.

Speaking through a translator Chancellor Merkel said recent attacks across Europe make citizens to feel understandably vulnerable.

“We will find out who was behind the attack,” she said after thanking other nations for their support in the aftermath of the incident.

“Many from abroad let us Germans know that they stand by us and we thank them for this. I it is good to know that between populations there is solidarity and that we have many friends against terrorism and violence.”

"We are all - and I'm saying this on behalf of the whole federal government - mourning with a heavy heart for those who will never return to their families," Merkel said.
