63 tonnes of Irish aid arrive in Nepal as agencies plan for years of relief work

Sixty-three tonnes of Irish aid have arrived in earthquake-stricken Nepal.

The delivery, which arrived last night, contains essential items including thousands of blankets, tents and water.

It arrived just before Nepal's main airport in Kathmandu was closed to large aircraft. The runway has been damaged by heavy cargo planes. Smaller jets can still land.

More than 7,000 people died in the quake. Gareth Owen from Save the Children estimates that a million youngsters have been affected.

"It's going to take months of relief effort in the short term. But it will take years of rehabilitation to rebuild the homes, schools and hospitals that have been lost," he said.

"Save The Children alone will be planning for at least three years of work on the back of this massive disaster."
