More than 3,600 migrants have been rescued trying to cross the Mediterranean from North Africa.

3,600 migrants rescued trying to cross Mediterranean from North Africa

More than 3,600 migrants have been rescued at sea in 17 different operations in just one day, according to the Italian Coast Guard.

The rescue operations took place yesterday in the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily as smugglers’ boats took advantage of calm seas and good weather.

Some of the migrants were due to arrive at Italian ports today – the remainder will get to land early tomorrow.
