17 people have died and more than a dozen others are missing after flash flooding and tornadoes ripped through towns on the US-Mexico border.

Passers by captured dramatic video footage of a driver in a jeep who was violently swept away by flood waters at a Texas golf course. The driver was reportedly rescued uninjured, but the video shows the extent and power of the floods.

Recovery teams in Texas are searching for 12 members of two families who disappeared after their holiday home was swept away.

A state of emergency has been declared in 24 counties.

Texas governor Greg Abbott says it's important people listen to official advice.

"Whenever local elected officials, or anybody warns people to get out of the way, to abandon wherever they may be and to evacuate, the devastation that we have seen is a reminder to heed those warnings," said Governor Abbott.
