New Syrian UN envoy welcomed18/08/2012 - 13:33:56
The appointment of a new United Nations envoy to Syria is being welcomed around the world.
Former Algerian foreign minister Lakhdar Brahimi was formally given the role last night, but has already admitted he's not confident he can help resolve the conflict in the country.
Russia, one of the Syrian regime's few remaining allies, has said it expects Brahimi to build on the existing 'road map' of his predecessor Kofi Annan - who quit the position a few weeks ago.
The European Union today pledged to support Brahimi in his "immensely challenging task".
