Berdych stunned by Gulbis
25/06/2012 - 20:34:22The number six seed and 2010 finalist Tomas Berdych was a surprise first-day casualty at Wimbledon as he was humbled by Ernests Gulbis.
In the first meeting between the two on grass, it was Gulbis, the Latvian who promised so much when he burst on to the scene but is now 87th in the world, who prevailed, winning in straight sets.
All three went to a tie-break, with Gulbis ending up a 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/4) winner, setting up a meeting against Jerzy Janowicz or Simone Bolelli next up.
Gulbis sent down a total of 30 aces in total and hit 62 winners in an all-action display, clinching victory in two hours and 38 minutes.
Berdych’s departure also represents good news for defending champion Novak Djokovic, with the Czech one of his potential opponent’s en-route to what he hopes will be a title retention.
