A major fire has broken out at the Panda Waste Recycling Facility in Co Meath.

Seven units of the fire service have been battling the blaze on the outskirts of Slane, on the N2 approach road into the town, since around 11.30pm last night.

No one has been injured, but substantial damage has been caused to the premises, where the bulk of the company's 250 staff members are based.

It is expected it could take at least the rest of today to put out the fire.

GardaĆ are warning motorists to take extra care while driving in the area, as visibility is said to be very poor, due to thick smoke.
