The Fianna Fáil leader Micháel Martin has said Eamon Ó Cuív will be expelled from the parliamentary party if he votes against the EU fiscal treaty in the Dáil.

Deputy Ó Cuív today resigned as Fianna Fáil deputy leader, and as front-bench spokesman on communications after a dispute with Mr Martin over the EU fiscal treaty.

He said his party's decision to advocate a yes vote in the referendum is wrong for Ireland.

However, party leader Mícháel Martin said once Deputy Ó Cuív made his position clear, he had to resign as deputy leader.
