Worthington to manage Wednesday?

20/10/2006 - 17:23:00
Nigel Worthington has indicated he would be interested in becoming manager of his former club Sheffield Wednesday.

Worthington was sacked by Norwich last month but is keen to return to management, and there is a vacancy at Hillsborough following the departure of Paul Sturrock yesterday.

Worthington told the Sheffield Star: “Sheffield Wednesday are a club for whom I have great respect. The overall situation would have to be right for Nigel Worthington and Sheffield Wednesday if there was to be any coming together.

“I have not put my name forward for the job and I have had no contact from anybody within the club. I wouldn’t rule it out. I’m always prepared to listen.”

Derby manager Billy Davies has confirmed central defender Lewin Nyatanga’s loan move to Sunderland could become permanent.

The 18-year-old has joined the Black Cats on loan until early January and goes straight into the squad for tomorrow’s match against Barnsley at the Stadium of Light.

However, Nyatanga’s stay on Wearside could become permanent with any deal possibly linked to Davies’ desire to sign Jon Stead, currently on loan at Derby from Sunderland, on a long-term basis.

Davies said: “Lewin has gone on loan until January 2 to get some games under his belt and as for what happens between now and then we will have to wait and see.

“I would never say never to a permanent transfer but all I can say at the moment is that he is going on loan. Lewin seems to revel in a back-three situation but we are playing a back four at the moment which makes it difficult for young Lewin to come in.

Southend chairman Ron Martin has promised fans striker Freddy Eastwood will not be sold, even if the club are offered £5m (€7.46m).

Martin confirmed he is planning on extending Eastwood’s existing contract at Roots Hall and that the club have had approaches for Eastwood from clubs including Plymouth, Cardiff, Sunderland and Norwich for the 22-year-old.

He told a supporters’ forum: “Freddy is not going anywhere."
