Wincanton call early check

Officials at Wincanton will stage an inspection at 2pm on Wednesday to assess the prospects of racing on Saturday.

Temperatures dipped as low as minus seven at the Somerset venue overnight and with more frost on the way, clerk of the course Barry Johnson is not optimistic.

“We got down to minus seven last night and although they are saying we might get up to plus one or two during the day, the forecast is for temperatures between minus four and minus seven for every night this week,” said Johnson.

“We are obviously frozen at the moment and it’s looking pretty bleak. We’ll give it until Wednesday and see where we are.”
