23/07/2005 - 19:18:00
Five time British Open winner Tom Watson has taken the lead in the British Seniors Open at Royal Aberdeen.

Watson took command on a day when the professional course record for the extended Royal Aberdeen course was lowered three times during the third round at the Balgownie links today.

Watson fired a 64 in a round which included six birdies and one eagle to bring him to three under, one shot ahead of overnight leader Craig Stadler.

Ireland's Des Smyth shares third place with Greg Norman. Smyth shot a 68 today to leave him at level par.

Mark McNulty, representing Ireland, lies 11th at seven over while Denis O'Sullivan is tied for 27th on 12 over.

The silver medal for leading amateur is a two-horse race between veteran Irish international Adrian Morrow, from Portmarnock, and American John Baldwin.

Morrow has been capped for Ireland in four decades – the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and in 2000 and he had a third-round 71 for 228 to edge two shots ahead of Baldwin, who had a 75.
