Walsh names Sligo team for New York trip04/05/2012 - 13:01:51
Sligo manager Kevin Walsh has selected a strong team to face New York in Sunday's Connacht SFC quarter-final at Gaelic Park (throw-in 3pm local time/8pm Irish time).
Long-term injury victims Eamonn O'Hara and David Kelly both miss out, although O'Hara is closer to making a return and may get some game-time off the bench.
Defender David Rooney has exams and has not travelled to the Big Apple, while Johnny Davey and Eugene Mullen are other notable absentees.
The selected side shows three changes with Pat Hughes and Stephen Coen added to the attack by Walsh. Shane McManus reverts to midfield where he partners Tony Taylor.
With Rooney ruled out, Charlie Harrison, the former captain and 2010 All-Star, will start in the half-back line alongside Mark Quinn and Paul McGovern.
Sligo have not played New York in the Bronx since 2007 when they posted a 2-18 to 1-3 Championship win.
Insisting that his charges will not fall victim to a shock defeat, Walsh told the Sligo Champion: "The mood in the squad is very positive. We accept that we have to proceed with caution because this is very much a step into the unknown, but we're confident of getting the right result.
"It's a matter of getting our own game right, keeping our heads down and getting the job done. There will be a lot of talk about New York and the potential for a shock result but we won't be sidetracked by that.
"It's a different sort of challenge for us and we'll have to adapt to all the circumstances associated with the fixture. We're not complacent in any way, but we're going there with a very positive attitude."
SLIGO (v New York): Philip Greene; Neil Ewing, Noel McGuire, Ross Donavan (capt); Charlie Harrison, Mark Quinn, Paul McGovern; Tony Taylor, Shane McManus; Brendan Egan, Pat Hughes, Alan Costello; Stephen Coen, Adrian Marren, Mark Breheny.
