A BBC reporter doing a vox pop in the build-up to today’s Merseyside derby got a very unexpected answer from one elderly man.
The journalist was asking people if they remembered when the two sides met in 1967, in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
He was very surprised by the answer from this man who responded cheerily: “I played in it. I was the goalkeeper for Liverpool”.
By enormous coincidence, the reporter had stopped Tommy Lawrence, who made 306 appearances for Liverpool in a 14 year career.
The game is famous for the enormous crowd that watched it - over 100,000 people.
64,000 of these were at Goodison Park watching the match live and another 40,000 were at Anfield to view the game on eight gigantic TV screens temporarily erected on the pitch.
Unfortunately for Tommy and his teammates they lost the match 1-0.
