Villa v Newcastle Saturday 23 August 12.45pm

Aston Villa: Villa debuts for Cole and Sanchez?

Joe Cole and Carlos Sanchez are set to make their competitive Aston Villa debuts against Newcastle at Villa Park on Saturday.

Cole missed last week’s opening-day 1-0 win at Stoke as he recovered from a thigh injury while Sanchez had only just signed from Elche. But the Colombia international has trained this week and boss Paul Lambert has confirmed he is available for the Barclays Premier League clash with the Magpies.

Jores Okore is also in contention after playing in an Under-21s game against Stoke on Monday. The defender suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury last September after just four appearances following his £4m arrival from FC Nordsjaelland. Strikers Christian Benteke (Achilles) and Libor Kozak (broken leg) remain sidelined.

Provisional squad: Guzan, Given, Baker, Vlaar, Okore, Clark, Senderos, Richardson, Hutton, Cissokho, Lowton, Stevens, Bacuna, El Ahmadi, Sanchez, Cole, Westwood, Delph, Herd, Gardner, N’Zogbia, Grealish, Weimann, Agbonlahor, Bent.

Newcastle: Magpies debut for De Jong

Summer signing Siem de Jong could be handed a Barclays Premier League debut as Newcastle head for Aston Villa on Saturday.

Former Ajax midfielder De Jong is available after missing the opener against Manchester City with the foot injury he suffered in pre-season, and will be joined in the squad by loan striker Facundo Ferreyra for the first time.

Midfielder Cheick Tiote will sit out once again with a hamstring problem, while central defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa picked up a knock in training last week and full-back Davide Santon is unlikely to return to the squad until November after undergoing knee surgery during the closed season.

Provisional squad: Krul, Elliot, Janmaat, Dummett, Haidara, Coloccini, Wiliamson, S Taylor, Anita, Abeid, Gouffran, Sissoko, Colback, Cabella, De Jong, Obertan, Aarons, Riviere, Ferreyra, Perez.

Chelsea v Leicester Saturday 23 August 3pm

Chelsea: No new problems for Mourinho

Chelsea have no fresh injury problems ahead of Saturday’s Barclays Premier League match against Leicester at Stamford Bridge.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could again be selected ahead of veteran Petr Cech.

Striker Didier Drogba shrugged of an ankle problem to make a late substitute appearance in the 3-1 win at Burnley on Monday night, and is in line to make his competitive return to the Bridge in Chelsea colours having rejoined the club in the summer.

Provisional Squad: Courtois, Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Azpilicueta, Fabregas, Hazard, Oscar, Matic, Schurrle, Costa, Cech, Luis, Torres, Zouma, Drogba, Mikel, Willian.

Leicester_ Pearson to run rule over duo

Leicester manager Nigel Pearson hopes Jamie Vardy and Marc Albrighton could be fit for Saturday’s Barclays Premier League trip to Chelsea.

Striker Vardy (thigh) and winger Albrighton (groin) may return for the Stamford Bridge clash, which will come too soon for Danny Drinkwater (hamstring) and Matty James (shin).

Summer signing Matthew Upson (foot) is still a couple of weeks short of a return.

Provisional squad: Schmeichel, Hamer, De Laet, Konchesky, Wasilewski, Schlupp, Moore, Morgan, King, Hammond, Albrighton, Knockaert, Mahrez, Vardy, Taylor-Fletcher, Ulloa, Nugent, Wood.

Crystal Palace v West Ham Saturday 23 August 3pm

Crystal Palace: Dann a doubt for Palace

Scott Dann has an “outside chance” of facing West Ham in Crystal Palace’s Barclays Premier League clash at Selhurst Park on Saturday, according to Keith Millen.

Palace’s caretaker manager will put Dann through a late fitness test as the central defender battles to beat a hip strain in time for the Hammers’ visit.

Adrian Mariappa trained on Thursday following a rib complaint, while Jonny Williams and Jerome Thomas are also fit to return.

Provisional squad: Speroni, Hennessey, Mariappa, Ward, Delaney, McCarthy, Dann, Hangeland, Jedinak, O’Keefe, Bannan, Ledley, Garvan, Williams, Guedioura, Bolasie, Thomas, Puncheon, Kebe, Gayle, Murray, Campbell, Chamakh.

West Ham: Defensive worries for Allardyce

Sam Allardyce is short of defensive options as he looks to guide West Ham to their first Barclays Premier League win of the season at Crystal Palace.

James Collins is suspended after his red card in the defeat to Tottenham, with Joey O’Brien (knee), James Tomkins and Carl Jenkinson (both hamstring) all struggling for fitness.

Matt Jarvis could be involved following a thigh injury but Ravel Morrison (groin) is not ready to return. Andy Carroll (ankle) is a long-term absentee, with Allardyce hopeful that either Enner Valencia or Diafra Sakho will be fit enough to start in attack.

Provisional squad: Adrian, Jaaskelainen, Cresswell, O’Brien, Reid, Tomkins Reece, Demel, Jenkinson, Potts, Noble, Kouyate, Poyet, Diame, Nolan, Whitehead, Downing, Vaz Te, Cole, Maiga, Sakho, Zarate.

Southampton v West Brom Saturday 23 August 3pm

Southampton

West Brom: Lescott unlikely to feature

Central defender Joleon Lescott is unlikely to make his West Brom debut at Southampton despite returning to training after a knee injury.

Cristian Gamboa will not be considered to face the Saints either with Albion boss Alan Irvine eager to give the right-back more time to settle after his £2m move from Rosenborg.

James Morrison (knee) remains sidelined but Gareth McAuley could figure after a calf problem and record signing Brown Ideye is available for the Barclays Premier League match.

Provisional squad: Foster, Myhill, Wisdom, Olsson, McAuley, Dawson, Pocognoli, Davidson, Yacob, Baird, Dorrans, Roofe, O’Neil, Mulumbu, Brunt, Sessegnon, Gardner, Ideye, Anichebe, Berahino.

Long in line for Saints start

Shane Long could make his full Southampton debut against former club West Brom after coming off the bench at Liverpool last weekend.

The Republic of Ireland forward moved to St Mary’s from Hull earlier this month and, after featuring for 15 minutes in the 2-1 defeat at Anfield, is in contention to start at home to the Baggies.

Fellow new signing Florin Gardos (hamstring) is still likely to miss out, with Gaston Ramirez (groin) and Jay Rodriguez (knee) definite absentees. Manager Ronald Koeman has also said goalkeeper Artur Boruc will not be considered for selection.

Provisional squad: Forster, Davis, Clyne, Yoshida, Gardos, Fonte, Hooiveld, Bertrand, Schneirderlin, Davis, Wanyama, Reed, Ward-Prowse, Isgrove, Taider, Cork, Tadic, Long, Pelle, Gallagher.

Swansea v Burnley Saturday 23 August 3pm

Swansea: Fernandez waiting for clearance

Swansea are waiting on international clearance for Argentine defender Federico Fernandez to feature against Burnley on Saturday.

Fernandez completed his £8m switch from Italian club Napoli on Wednesday but Swansea are still waiting for the paperwork for the 25-year-old to make his debut.

Even if Fernandez is cleared to play he may still not start as manager Garry Monk could opt to name the same side which shocked Manchester United at Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the season. Swansea are still without Leon Britton, Marvin Emnes and Jay Fulton, all with knee injuries.

Provisional squad: Fabianski, Rangel, Taylor, Amat, Williams, Ki, Shelvey, Dyer, Routledge, Sigurdsson, Bony, Tremmel, Tiendalli, Montero, Gomis, Bartley, Fernandez, Richards, Sheehan, King, Kingsley.

Burnley: Vokes misses out

Striker Sam Vokes remains Burnley’s only absentee as they travel to Swansea on Saturday.

The Wales international remains sidelined with anterior cruciate ligament damage but the Clarets have everyone else available, including new signing Stephen Ward.

The Republic of Ireland international will compete with Ben Mee for the left-back position and can also operate in midfield.

Provisional squad: Heaton, Trippier, Ward, Duff, Shackell, Mee, Wallace, Marney, Ings, Kightly, Jones, Taylor, Sordell, Reid, Jutkiewicz, Gilks, Long, Barnes, Hewitt, Arfield.

Everton v Arsenal Saturday 23 August 5.30pm

Everton: Gibson to make Toffees return?

Everton midfielder Darron Gibson could be back in contention for Saturday’s Barclays Premier League visit of Arsenal after 10 months on the sidelines.

The Irishman, who suffered anterior cruciate ligament damage last October, has steadily built his fitness and is thought to be nearing a return.

Right-back Seamus Coleman (hamstring) is also fit after appearing as a late substitute at Leicester last week but striker Arouna Kone (knee) and midfielder Bryan Oviedo (leg) are not yet ready and midfielder Ross Barkley (knee) faces a lengthy lay-off.

Provisional squad: Howard, Coleman, Distin, Jagielka, Baines, Barry, McCarthy, Osman, Pienaar, Lukaku, Robles, Hibbert, Stones, Alcaraz, Gibson, Besic, McGeady, Naismith, Mirallas, Atsu.

Arsenal: Arteta misses Goodison return

Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta will miss the trip to former club Everton on Saturday because of an ankle problem.

World Cup winners Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil could return to the squad after being given extra time off, as could forward Yaya Sanogo (hamstring) who did not travel in the midweek Champions League play-off away to Besiktas.

Full-back Kieran Gibbs (hamstring) remains sidelined, while midfielders Theo Walcott and Serge Gnabry continue their recovery from knee problems and will not feature in the Barclays Premier League contest.

Provisional squad: Szczesny, Debuchy, Chambers, Koscielny, Monreal, Flamini, Wilshere, Ramsey, Sanchez, Cazorla, Giroud, Martinez, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Campbell, Miquel, Rosicky, Bellerin, Diaby, Sanogo, Mertesacker, Podolski, Ozil.

Hull v Stoke Sunday 24 August 1.30pm

Hull: Bruce set to make changes

Hull manager Steve Bruce is expected to make wholesale changes when his side host Stoke on Sunday.

The Tigers side beaten by Lokeren in Thursday’s Europa League play-off first leg included just two of the starting XI which beat QPR on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League season and Bruce will shuffle his pack again.

Yannick Sagbo serves the second and final game of a domestic ban, while Robert Snodgrass (knee) is a long-term absentee.

Provisional squad: McGregor, Harper, Chester, Davies, Bruce, Figueroa, Rosenior, McShane, Boyd, Elmohamady, Huddlestone, Livermore, Ince, Brady, Jelavic, Aluko, Quinn, Robertson.

Stoke

Spurs v QPR Sunday 24 August 1.30pm

Naughton suspended for Spurs

Tottenham full-back Kyle Naughton will miss this weekend’s clash with QPR through suspension.

The 25-year-old is banned after being sent off in the Premier League opener at West Ham, leaving him on the sidelines with Kyle Walker (pelvis) and Vlad Chiriches (back).

Emmanuel Adebayor, Christian Eriksen, Younes Kaboul, Aaron Lennon and Etienne Capoue will return after being rested for Thursday’s energy-sapping Europa League clash at AEL Limassol. Tom Carroll travelled to Cyprus but has since joined Swansea on a season-long loan.

Provisional squad: Lloris, Vorm, Friedel, Naughton, Kaboul, Dawson, Vertonghen, Dier, Davies, Rose, Veljkovic, Capoue, Bentaleb, Sandro, Paulinho, Dembele, Eriksen, Lamela, Lennon, Chadli, Townsend, Holtby, Adebayor, Kane, Soldado.

QPR: Duo in line for debuts

Harry Redknapp could hand debuts to Mauricio Isla and Leroy Fer in Sunday’s London derby at Tottenham.

Isla and Fer are both fit and have been training but fellow new recruit Eduardo Vargas is not in contention as he still requires a work permit having signed on loan from Napoli.

Chile international Isla could come in for Danny Simpson, while Fer only featured as a subsitute once for Norwich before his move and could start from the bench at White Hart Lane.

Provisional squad: Green, Murphy, Hill, Dunne, Ferdinand, Onuoha, Caulker, Yun, Simpson, Traore, Isla, Henry, Barton, Fer, Mutch, Faurlin, Hoilett, Phillips, Wright-Phillips, Austin, Remy, Zamora.

Sunderland v Man Utd Sunday 24 August 4pm

Sunderland: Poyet has defensive duo back

Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet will welcome defenders Billy Jones and Santiago Vergini back into his squad for Sunday’s Barclays Premier League visit of Manchester United.

Jones missed the 2-2 draw with former club West Brom last weekend because of a troublesome hamstring, while Vergini is understood to have sat out because of an administrative problem – but both will be available this weekend.

That means Poyet’s only significant absentee will be Italian midfielder Emanuele Giaccherini, who continues his recovery from a groin injury.

Provisional squad: Mannone, Pantilimon, Jones, Van Aanholt, Brown, O’Shea, Vergini, Roberge, Cattermole, Bridcutt, Rodwell, Gomez, Larsson, Johnson, Buckley, Mavrias, Wickham, Fletcher, Altidore, Graham.

Utd without duo

Van Gaal has been hit by a double injury blow in the build-up to Sunday's match at Sunderland.

Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini both suffered ankle injuries in training, leaving Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley as Van Gaal’s only two fit central midfielders.

Midfielders Michael Carrick is out, as is utility man Jesse Lingard, who has a knee injury, but Antonio Valencia has recovered from the leg problem that kept him out of the defeat to Swansea.

Defenders Jonny Evans (leg), Luke Shaw (hamstring) and Marcos Rojo (awaiting work permit) are unavailable while doubts remain over right-back Rafael (groin) and striker Danny Welbeck (knee), who has also been told he can leave the club.

The good news for United is that Van Persie is now up to full fitness and is likely to start up front alongside Rooney at the Stadium of Light.

Provisional squad: De Gea, Lindegaard, Amos, Rafael, Valencia, Smalling, Jones, M Keane, Blackett, James, Fletcher, Cleverley, Anderson, Young, Mata, Kagawa, Zaha, Januzaj, Van Persie, Rooney, Welbeck, Hernandez, Powell, W Keane.

Man City v Liverpool Monday 25 August 8pm

Man City: Mangala still sidelined for City

New Manchester City signing Eliaquim Mangala remains unlikely to make his debut in Monday’s Barclays Premier League clash against Liverpool.

The £32m defender only joined up with the club last week and is still short of match-fitness but defender Pablo Zabaleta could be back in line to start and loan midfielder Frank Lampard is available.

Striker Sergio Aguero, who came off the bench to score at Newcastle last week, may not be ready to play 90 minutes while fellow forward Alvaro Negredo (foot) remains out long term.

Provisional squad: Hart, Caballero, Zabaleta, Sagna, Kompany, Demichelis, Nastasic, Boyata, Clichy, Kolarov, Silva, Milner, Nasri, Navas, Toure, Fernandinho, Fernando, Aguero, Jovetic, Dzeko.

Liverpool pair ready for action

Summer signings Lazar Markovic and Alberto Moreno are in contention to make debuts on Monday.

Fit-again winger Markovic and defender Moreno, recruited last week from Sevilla, are both set to be included in the squad for the match but fellow summer arrival Adam Lallana’s wait to make his bow definitely goes on, with the midfielder not quite ready yet as his rehabilitation from a knee injury nears its conclusion.

Jose Enrique’s condition will be assessed, while Daniel Agger, Jon Flanagan and Oussama Assaidi remain sidelined.

Provisional squad: Mignolet, Johnson, Lovren, Skrtel, Enrique, Gerrard, Henderson, Allen, Coutinho, Sterling, Sturridge, Jones, Manquillo, Toure, Sakho, Lucas, Can, Lambert, Markovic, Moreno.
