Stephen Kenny bullish after St Pats trashing
Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny has defended his team selection after Dundalk were well beaten by St Patrick's Athletic at Richmond Park last night.
The champions slumped to a 5-2 defeat after just Gary Rogers and Alan Keane were retained from the side that beat Bohemians to claim the title last Sunday.
Dundalk are in the midst of a gruelling schedule as they continue to battle on three fronts in the SSE Airticity League, the Europa League and the FAI Cup.
"It’s a magnificent week for the club winning the league on Sunday but having to play again within 48 hours is crazy," Kenny told RTÉ Sport.
"Yes, we had to make a lot of changes, but we had no choice. We had to give the players a night off.
"We made nine changes but we didn’t envisage losing.
"Unfortunately we deserved to lose, there’s no getting away from it."
The Lilywhites round off their league season with a home game against Galway on Friday night.
They then face a long haul trip to Russia to face Zenit St Petersburg the following Thursday before heading to the Aviva Stadium to try and complete a consecutive double when they face Cork City in the FAI Cup final on Sunday November 6.
