Cork City delighted Turner's Cross as they hammered runaway Irish League leaders Cliftonville 4-0 in the pick of last night's Setanta Sports Cup first round, first leg clashes as the cross-border competition got under way.
Gearoid Morrissey sent Tommy Dunne's Leesiders on their way with the lead goal on 16 minutes. Fellow midfielder Ian Turner added a second from a penalty ten minutes later before getting his second of the night in first half stoppage time.
New signing Daryl Kavanagh got Cork's fourth goal on 69 minutes to all but book their place in the quarter-finals with the second leg at Solitude still to come.
There was no such joy for Dublin sides Shamrock Rovers and St. Patrick's Athletic, however.
Rovers, under new boss Trevor Croly, lost 1-0 at home to Coleraine, substitute David Scullion getting the only goal of the night in first half stoppage time.
St. Pat's were left utterly frustrated at Richmond Park as they had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Glentoran after dominating for long periods. Goalkeeper Elliot Morris was the Glentoran hero with a terrific save from Jordan Keegan in stoppage time.
Drogheda United beat Portadown 3-2 in a cracking game at Hunky Dorys Park. Ryan Brennan and new signing Paul O'Connor scored inside 14 minutes to appear to have Mick Cooke's side in command.
But Aaron Burns and Kevin Braniff replied for Portadown to draw them level by the break before Gavin Brennan hit a second have winner for Drogheda.
