Schweinsteiger blow for Germany and Bayern

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is set to miss the start of the Bundesliga season and Germany’s next two international fixtures, according to his club’s chairman.

Speaking in Munich on Tuesday, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said the knee injury which Schweinsteiger aggravated during a pre-season match in the United States was likely to sideline the World Cup winner until mid-September.

“It’s not something which he can shake off in a week or two,” Rummenigge told Sport1.de.

“It’s going to take a while longer than that.”

Rummenigge revealed the 30-year-old had undergone further tests on Monday and does not now expect to see the midfielder back in action until after his club’s first two games of the season, as well as missing Germany’s clashes with Argentina on September 3 and Scotland four days later.

“We’re confident it is not going to become a long-term issue,” Rummenigge said.

“We’re just going to have to be patient for a few more weeks and we are patient.”
