Rio a worry for Inter clash

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is a concern for the Champions League clash against Inter Milan this week after picking up an ankle injury in the FA Cup quarter-final win over Fulham.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is a concern for the Champions League clash against Inter Milan this week after picking up an ankle injury in the FA Cup quarter-final win over Fulham.

Ferdinand was taken off at half-time and left Craven Cottage with a protective boot on his right foot following the 4-0 win, courtesy of two goals from Carlos Tevez and strikes from Wayne Rooney and Ji-sung Park.

The injury setback was the only sour point to a relentless display from United, who remain in the hunt for a quintuple this season.

“Ferdinand is a bit of a concern,” Ferguson said. “He went over on his ankle and I hope he is alright for Wednesday because he is so important to us.”

United made it through to a record 26th semi-final, largely thanks to Tevez’s two first-half strikes, the first a far-post header and the second a fearsome drive.

“It was a superb performance, he has so much great energy,” Ferguson said. “He was a jack in the box all day.”

Rooney added his goal just after the break, then Park scored nine minutes before full-time.

“Everyone was fit and fresh and bursting to play,” Ferguson said.

“It was exciting right from the work go, with energy and enjoyment.

“But it was a tricky tie, Fulham were in form and we had to respect that. The last thing we needed was a draw.”

Ferguson could even afford to rest Cristiano Ronaldo and keep Dimitar Berbatov on the bench.

He added: “My biggest concern is picking the right team, it’s not easy for me leaving out great players in every game.

“I hope at the end of the season it will be recognised that everyone has made a contribution.”

United midfielder Michael Carrick was full of praise for Tevez, picking out his second strike as the highlight of of great all-round performance.

“It was a great strike, he’s scored quite a few to be fair but that one was special” said Carrick on ITV.

“His two important goals in the first half put us in control of the game and after that it was pretty comfortable for us.

“I think he’s still played his fair share of games the same as everyone else, everyone gets rotated at some point and the players that have come in have been on top form.

“Hopefully that will continue because there’s alot of games coming up. But Carlos was excellent today.”

Carrick thought the front pair of Tevez and Rooney made for an effective combination.

“In the first half we played some good stuff and I thought the front two were brilliant. We created a number of chances and Wazza missed a bit of an easy chance but he made up for it. And we kept a clean sheet so we’re very happy.”

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson believes United can complete a quintuple.

“Of course it is possible for United to win the lot,” he said. “They have a good chance and I wouldn’t bet against them. The most difficult will be the Champions League.”

He added: “I thought we were good in the first half, obviously we were disappointed with the first goal, we know how good they are at set plays so that is a major disappointment.

“The second goal was a wonder strike, then you have a mountainous task. Your only chance against them is to go a goal up.”
