Player breaks record by scoring from edge of his own box

Paderborn midfielder Moritz Stoppelkamp scored a stunning goal from the edge of his own area as his side beat Hanover 96 2-0 today.

At 83 metres it takes the record for the longest distance goal ever scored in the Bundesliga.

That's 91 yards for the traditionalists amongst you.

Hanover won a free kick inside the Paderborn half and, trailing 1-0 with just a few moments left in stoppage time, their goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler elected to go up to join the attack in the Paderborn box.

When the cleared free kick fell to Stoppelkamp the 27-year-old German controlled the ball before swivelling and hitting a the perfect volley.

The ball landed just outside the Hanover box, but with no defenders nearby its momentum was enough to carry it over the line.

The previous record was 70 metres, held by Greek player Georgios Tzavellas of Frankfurt, in 2011.
