An unchanged Manchester United travelled to Tottenham looking to finish an ignominious 2014 on a high and continue their bid to regain a Champions League place.

Louis van Gaal, who succeeded the sacked David Moyes in the summer, retained the same starting XI which began Friday’s 3-1 defeat of Newcastle for United’s second match in 48 hours.

Vlad Chiriches, Ben Davies, Ryan Mason and Andros Townsend came into a Tottenham side showing four changes following their 2-1 win at Leicester, with Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Nabil Bentaleb and Erik Lamela dropping out.

Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris, Chiriches, Fazio, Vertonghen, Davies, Stambouli, Mason, Townsend, Eriksen, Chadli, Kane. Subs: Walker, Paulinho, Soldado, Lamela, Vorm, Dier, Dembele.

Man Utd: De Gea, Jones, McNair, Evans, Carrick, Valencia, Mata, Rooney, Young, van Persie, Falcao. Subs: Da Silva, Shaw, Smalling, Lindegaard, Fletcher, Pereira, Wilson.
