New York paper tells readers Lampard 'mocked' Americans over 9/11

Frank Lampard’s proposed move to New York City FC has prompted one paper to bring up a decade-old insult to US citizens.

The New York Daily News yesterday published a story about an incident Lampard was involved in on the day after the 9/11 attacks.

Chelsea had been due to play a match on September 12 but it was cancelled as a mark of respect for the victims.

Lampard and several other members of the Chelsea team then went on a drinking binge in a hotel full of American citizens who were grounded in London.

According to a report on the BBC website the incident involved the players “stripping, swearing and vomiting at the hotel near Heathrow airport, which was full with Americans stranded by flight cancellations, according to the News of the World.”

The club subsequently fined all the players involved two weeks' wages and this was donated to a fund to help families affected by the attacks on New York.

The then managing director of Chelsea, Colin Hutchinson, also stressed at the time that there had been no intention to offend or upset anyone on the part of the players.

“They were categorical that in no way had they intended to insult any individuals and they said that they certainly didn't abuse anyone.”

“They were loud between themselves but they, like everyone at the club, have been as hurt and moved by what has happened in the United States as anyone else.”

“Their behaviour was totally out of order but there is no way that the players went out to insult or abuse anyone.”

The New York paper’s article reported that the players were fined but did not report any defence of their behaviour. Lampard will be hoping that this youthful indiscretion does not come back to haunt him.

The deal with the MLS side will reportedly see him continue to earn his current salary of £150k per week, far in excess of what he could hope to earn anywhere in Europe.
