Shelbourne 0 Derry City 3
A brace of goal from Stephen McLaughlin, the second a stunning strike, booked Derry City’s place in the FAI Ford Cup final with St. Patrick’s Athletic at the Aviva Stadium on November 4th.
In an open first half, both sides hit the woodwork before Derry trooped off at the interval reasonable value for their 1-0 lead.
Derry started the better but it was Shels who carved the first openings, Kevin Dawson shooting narrowly wide before Stephen Paisley had a header cleared off the line by Paddy McEleney. Paisley’s ball over the top then put Dawson away with the midfielder drilling a shot off the butt of a post.
The response was positive from Derry, though, with Paddy McEleney surging through to rattle the Shels bar with a left-foot drive before they took the lead a minute before the break.
Simon Madden beat two defenders to cross low for winger McLaughlin to side-foot to the net from close range.
McLaughlin stunned Shels further 17 minutes into the second half, racing down the line onto Stewart Greacen’s ball and cutting between two defenders before rifling a left-foot shot to the top corner of the net.
It was all over for Shels six minutes later when David McDaid got in behind onto Barry Molloy’s ball over the top to round Chris Bennion and roll the ball home.
