Late equaliser sees Hoops salvage point - Airtricity League roundup

Karl Sheppard hit a late equaliser as Shamrock Rovers salvaged a point from a 1-1 draw - the Hoops' seventh stalemate of the campaign - with champions Sligo Rovers at Tallaght Stadium.

Despite dominating the first half, Trevor Crolly's side fell behind ten minutes into the second when Sligo midfielder David Cawley punished dreadfully sloppy defending to shoot past Barry Murphy.

But the Dublin Rovers battled back and got their reward in the 84th minute. Ciaran Kilduff did well to win back possession for Sean O'Connor's cross to be helped on by Jason McGuinness for Sheppard to head home.

Sligo finished with ten men when topscorer Anthony Elding was sent off for a lunging challenge on Stephen Rice three minutes from time.

With Sligo failing to win, Derry City scored twice late on to come from behind and beat Limerick 2-1 at the Brandywell to got top of the table on goal difference ahead of the sides meeting at the Showgrounds on Monday.

Defender Stephen Folan headed home a Shane Tracy corner to give Limerick a 28th minutes lead.

Derry were much the better side in the second half and finally levelled on 86 minutes when Mark Griffin scrambled the ball home in a crowded penalty area.

Two minutes later Rory Patterson got a touch to a Barry McNamee shot to deflect the ball past Limerick keeper Barry Ryan for a dramatic late winner.

St. Patrick's Athletic got back to winning ways after two frustrating draws to beat Cork City 2-0 at Turner's Cross.

Much the better side from the start, St. Pat's took the lead on 22 minutes, Anto Flood scoring with a glancing header from a Chris Forrester cross as he found the net for the second successive match.

Midfielder John Russell doubled the lead three minutes into the second half, bursting through to work a one-two with Flood before shooting past Mark McNulty. St. Pat's should have added a third goal on 84 minutes but McNulty easily saved Christy Fagan's tame penalty.

Pat Hoban scored for the second week running to give Dundalk a third win on the spin as they beat Bray Wanderers 1-0 at the Carlisle Grounds to remain comfortably in fourth place in the table.

The game's only goal came six minutes into the second half when striker Hoban headed home Darren Meenan's corner.

The defeat, a seventh on the spin, means Bray drop to the bottom of the table on goal difference.

As they did at St. Pat's last Monday, Bohemians showed their mettle again to carve out another gutsy point as they twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Drogheda United.

Michael Daly put Drogheda ahead after just 50 seconds at Hunky Dorys Park when flicking home a David Cassidy cross following a short corner.

Bohs hit back to level nine minutes before half-time. Dwayne Wilson latched onto Keith Buckley's pass to get through one-on-one with Gabriel Sava and slide the ball past the home keeper.

But Drogheda trooped off at the interval back in front after midfielder Paul O'Conor followed up to tap home on 41 minutes.

Bohs equalised again six minutes into the second half. Winger Andy Mullligan worked the opening, bursting in on goal form the left to shoot. The ball came back off defender Alan McNally to sit up nicely for Ryan McEvoy to rifle to the net.

Long range strikes from Adam Hanlon and Stephen Hurley finally brought Shelbourne a first win of the season to lift them off the foot of the table as they beat UCD 2-0 at Tolka Park.

Shels took the lead on 26 minutes. There seemed little on as Hanlon cut in from the right and his low left-footer from just outside the box seemed to surprise Ger Barron to beat the UCD keeper at his near post.

Fellow midfielder Hurley sealed the points with the second goal on 57 minutes. Sean Brennan’s cross was only partially cleared and Hurley hit a first time shot from 30 yards that flew into the back of the net.
