Lahm set to bow out

Germany captain Philipp Lahm is set to announce his retirement from international football with immediate effect, according to Germany’s Bild newspaper.

The 30-year-old, who got his hands on the World Cup on Sunday, is reported to have already informed coach Joachim Low of his decision to step down both as captain and as a player.

Lahm made his Germany debut back in 2004, and 10 years later he is set to bow out at the zenith, after making 113 appearances for his country.

He has been captain since 2010, when he benefitted from an injury to Michael Ballack to lead his nation out in South Africa.

In four years as German captain, he led them to semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 before crowning his career at the Maracana with World Cup glory in Brazil.

That was the ninth trophy Lahm had picked up in just two years having clinched the Bundesliga twice, the DFB-Pokal twice, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the German Supercup, and the FIFA Club World Cup for Bayern Munich.
