Ireland fans warned of potential flight disruption

Republic of Ireland supporters travelling to the Euro 2016 Championships have been warned of potential disruption to flight schedules.

The warning comes after French air traffic controllers’ (ATC) unions have announced four further days of strike action over the next fortnight.

Ryanair today called on the European Commission to take action to prevent disruption to millions of air passengers’ plans this summer.

The airline has cancelled over 70 flights due to fly to/from and over France tomorrow, with further delays likely, in what will be the 47th French strike since 2009, and sixth in two months.

French ATC unions have announced further strikes on June 3, 4, 5, affecting thousands of flights across Europe.

EU airlines have repeated their called for the European Commission to require French ATC unions to engage in binding arbitration instead of strikes to resolve their claims, or allow Europe’s other ATCs to operate overflights over France while ATC unions are on strike.

Ryanair advised customers travelling tomorrow to check the status of their flight on the Ryanair website before travelling to the airport.

“Once more Europe’s consumers are being held to ransom by these tiny French ATC unions, causing hundreds of thousands of passenger flights to be cancelled or delayed, while the European Commission and French Government sit back and do nothing,” said Ryanair’s chief marketing officer, Kenny Jacobs.

“As we approach the peak holiday season, European travellers should prepare for a summer of discontent as there is absolutely nothing preventing these selfish unions from staging even more strikes in the coming weeks and months.

“Indeed, those travelling to the European Championships should prepare themselves for potential disruption also.”

The latest ATC strikes in Greece, Italy, Belgium and France in March, April and May caused more than 16,000 hours of delay across all airlines operating in European airspace.

“The overall impact of these strikes will be immense as they are taking place at a very busy time of the year”, said Thomas Reynaert, Managing Director of A4E.

“We are hurtling towards a summer of disruption and frustration for customers. The European Commission and governments must act immediately to protect the rights of millions of European travellers affected by this repeated and disproportionate industrial action.”
