Given: Poland have a 'European way' of winning free kicks

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given believes Poland were smarter at winning free kicks at the Aviva last night.

The Boys in Green had to rely on a last-gasp Shane Long goal to salvage a point against Poland last night which has left Martin O'Neill's men standing in fourth place in Group D.

The Aston Villa stopper believes that because Ireland are in such a tight group, the qualifying spots won't be decided until the last game.

Given said: "It'll probably come down to the wire, the last couple of games and had we have lost, it would have been a big blow for us.

"Who knows what that point is going to do for us at the end of the campaign, it was a massive point, I think."

He suggested that Poland were more streetwise than his fellow players, as the Polish won more free kicks in last night's qualifier.

He said: "They've got a way of going down, that's the European way, they're very good at it.

"I'm not saying it's cheating, it's just the way they can roll over and it's difficult for referees. There are five officials in the game and they can't see everything."

Given was reluctant to suggest however that the Republic of Ireland should follow suit.

"I wouldn't want to say yes or no, but I suppose it is being streetwise.

"If you get hit in the (penalty) box or outside the box, you should go over, perhaps."
