Ex-footballer on bribes plot charge

A former Premier League footballer has been charged with conspiracy to commit bribery.

Delroy Facey, 34, of Huddersfield, who played 10 times for Bolton in the top tier of English football from 2002 to 2004, was originally arrested in November 2013.

The charges relate to an ongoing football match-fixing investigation by the National Crime Agency which secured the conviction in June of Chann Sankaran, Krishna Ganeshan and Michael Boateng.

They paid footballers to influence the outcome of matches so that others could profit through betting on the result.

Other clubs that Facey has played for include West Brom, Hull, Notts County, Lincoln and Tranmere.

The Crown Prosecution Service’s Organised Crime Division said it believes there is a realistic prospect of conviction and that a prosecution is in the public interest.

Another man arrested as part of the same investigation, Moses Swaibu, will be retried after the jury was unable to reach a verdict in June. He will appear at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday, September 19.

Facey began his professional career with hometown club Huddersfield, where he impressed before moving on to Bolton.
