With the SSE Airtricity League set to be decided at Oriel Park on Friday some Cork City fans used all their ingenuity to secure themselves tickets for the game.

League leaders Cork City go to second-placed Dundalk for the final game of the season and their away allocation of 600 tickets had sold out by the end of the weekend.

Corkmen Cian O’Callaghan and Eoin McCarthy told the Evening Echo about their undercover mission to Louth.

The die-hard fans decided they would have to go behind enemy lines to secure a ticket. They left Cork before dawn on Monday, arriving in Dundalk by 11am.

“We knew it was going to be hard to buy tickets. With demand so tight there was no way two lads from Cork were going to be sold as many tickets as we wanted,” Cian said.

“Luckily our taxi driver was from Cavan and didn’t mind going in and buying the maximum four tickets for us.”

O’Callaghan then tried his luck for some more, but admits his undercover skills weren’t the best.

“Then it was my turn. I’m terrible with accents but did my best northern-style accent,” he said. “ I managed to buy my four tickets but I fell back into my Cork accent as I left.”

They decided that there was no point Eoin trying the same manoeuvre and they made the right decision - reports online showed Dundalk fans were getting suspicious of unusual accents in their midst.

The intrepid pair did attempt to recruit other decoys to the cause, but the game sold out before they could buy more and they returned to Cork with just eight precious tickets.

Now all they need is for their team to perform on Friday night and make it all worthwhile.
