Brady: Important to finish the year on a high
Robbie Brady scored his first two home goals for the Republic of Ireland in last night’s 4-1 friendly win over the USA, but said the best thing about the match was getting a positive result after the defeat to Scotland on Friday.
In a post-match interview, Brady was asked how it felt to score twice in front of a home crowd.
“It was good to get my first home goals, I’m over the moon with that.” he said, before turning attention to Ireland’s Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.
“It was good to get our minds off the bad result we had the other night. It was good to finish the year on a good result and hopefully we can get ourselves together.”
He continued: “It was a big deal to go and put in a decent performance tonight, after the other night. It wasn’t the result we wanted.”
Ireland’s 1-0 defeat in Celtic Park leaves them level with Germany and Scotland on seven points, while Poland lead Group D with 10 points.
“Hopefully we can get ourselves together and go and get the points we need against Poland,” Brady said, referring to Ireland’s next qualifying game, when they play Poland at the Aviva in March.
“We’re not a million miles off, 8 points would have been brilliant but there’s nothing we can do about it now. We didn’t get the result we wanted the other night, it was a scrappy game and it went their way. It was very disappointing, the lads are still disappointed so hopefully tonight can take a little bit off that.
“We’re fully concentrated on the group and although it was a good performance tonight we’ll be looking full-steam ahead to Poland at home.”
The Hull City player, who normally plays on the wing for his club, said he had no issue with playing at left-back last night.
“It’s different, but it’s not too different to where I play at the club, although I get forward more at the club,” Brady said.
“I’m happy with how he(manager Martin O’Neill) thought I did. I know I could touch up on some stuff at left-back and I will try and work on that in the few months I’m away.”
“I enjoyed it all-in-all,” he said. “And if that’s where the manager needs me to play at any stage I’d be happy to do it.”
“If I keep on playing every week with my club and keep myself in good stead, hopefully I can do enough to try and get a game next time the (qualifying) games come around.”
