West Ham v Spurs

Mauricio Pochettino handed Tottenham’s club-record signing Erik Lamela just his fourth Barclays Premier League start for their season opener at West Ham.

Lamela, 22, failed to make an impact in his first year at White Hart Lane but was given a chance to impress by Pochettino, who also gave a debut to defender Eric Dier.

There was no place in the starting line-up for Ben Davies, with Danny Rose preferred at left-back for the visitors, who were captained by Younes Kaboul.

Aaron Cresswell and Cheikhou Kouyate made their West Ham bows as Sam Allardyce named Carlton Cole as his lone striker – with new signing Enner Valencia fit enough to make the bench at Upton Park.

West Ham: Adrian, O’Brien, Reid, Collins, Cresswell, Noble, Drampis, Vaz Te, Nolan, Downing, Cole. Subs: Zarate, Demel, Diame, Jaaskelainen, Poyet, Valencia, Burke.

Tottenham Hotspur: Lloris, Naughton, Kaboul, Dier, Rose, Bentaleb, Capoue, Lennon, Lamela, Eriksen, Adebayor. Subs: Soldado, Holtby, Townsend, Kane, Dawson, Friedel, Davies.

Referee: Mike Jones (Cheshire)

West Brom v Sunderland

Sunderland’s headline summer signing Jack Rodwell was handed his debut as the Black Cats began their Barclays Premier League campaign at West Brom.

Rodwell lined up alongside fellow new acquisition Patrick van Aanholt at The Hawthorns as Sunderland took on the side they beat to clinch top-flight survival in May.

New West Brom boss Alan Irvine gave starts to three of his eight new signings in former Sunderland player Craig Gardner, Andre Wisdom and Sebastien Pocognoli, but record buy Brown Ideye was on the bench.

West Brom: Foster, Wisdom, Dawson, Olsson, Pocognoli, Dorrans, Gardner, Mulumbu, Brunt, Berahino, Anichebe. Subs: Baird, Yacob, Ideye, Myhill, Davidson, O’Neil, Sessegnon.

Sunderland: Mannone, Roberge, Brown, O’Shea, Van Aanholt, Larsson, Cattermole, Rodwell, Johnson, Wickham, Fletcher. Subs: Pantilimon, Bridcutt, Gomez, Altidore, Mavrias, Graham, Buckley.

Referee: Neil Swarbrick (Lancashire)

Stoke v Aston Villa

Forward Bojan Krkic was among three players making their competitive Stoke debuts in the starting line-up for Saturday’s Barclays Premier League opening-day clash with Aston Villa at the Britannia Stadium.

Striker Mame Biram Diouf and full-back Phil Bardsley were the other two, while fellow summer recruit Steve Sidwell was on the Potters bench, but new loan arrival Victor Moses was not eligible to be involved.

There was also a trio of summer signings in the Villa side in wide man Kieran Richardson and defensive pair Philippe Senderos and Aly Cissokho, who were joined at the back by Alan Hutton, making his first competitive appearance for the club of manager Paul Lambert’s tenure after two seasons of being frozen out.

Winger Charles N’Zogbia, having missed all of last term through injury, was also back in the first XI and striker Darren Bent – another previously exiled under Lambert – was among the substitutes.

Stoke: Begovic, Bardsley, Shawcross, Wilson, Pieters, Whelan, Nzonzi, Bojan, Ireland, Arnautovic, Diouf. Subs: Huth, Muniesa, Adam, Walters, Sidwell, Crouch, Sorensen.

Aston Villa: Guzan, Hutton, Vlaar, Senderos, Cissokho, Westwood, Delph, Agbonlahor, N’Zogbia, Richardson, Weimann. Subs: Baker, Clark, Bacuna, El Ahmadi, Bent, Given, Grealish.

Referee: Anthony Taylor (England)

QPR v Hull

Harry Redknapp handed debuts to three summer signings as newly-promoted QPR hosted Hull on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League season.

Steven Caulker and Rio Ferdinand started in a defensive three with Richard Dunne while Jordon Mutch was named in central midfield alongside Joey Barton and Alejandro Faurlin.

Loic Remy, who came close to joining Liverpool earlier in the summer, started up front.

Hull forward Yannick Sagbo served the first of a two-match ban for supporting Nicolas Anelka’s ’quenelle’ gesture on Twitter but new signings Robert Snodgrass, Tom Ince and Jake Livermore were all selected.

QPR: Green, Caulker, Ferdinand, Dunne, Simpson, Faurlin, Mutch, Barton, Traore, Remy, Austin. Subs: Hill, Phillips, Onuoha, Henry, Murphy, Hoilett, Zamora.

Hull: McGregor, Bruce, Chester, Davies, Elmohamady, Huddlestone, Livermore, Robertson, Snodgrass, Ince, Jelavic. Subs: Figueroa, Meyler, Brady, McShane, Harper, Aluko, Quinn.

Referee: Craig Pawson (South Yorkshire)
