So easy for fabulous flyer

08/04/2005 - 15:39:11
Moscow Flyer thrilled the crowds at Aintree today as he put in a hugely impressive display to take the Grade One John Smith’s Melling Chase.

The Jessica Harrington-trained 11-year-old was cruising throughout and the result never looked in doubt once he took it up turning for home.

The 4-9 favourite put in a fine leap at the last for Barry Geraghty to come home easily clear of Le Roi Miguel, with Therealbandit back in third.

Therealbandit, who was stepping back in trip, set out to make all along with Kadarann, while Geraghty was havly on.

The Queen Mother Champion Chase hero was pulling hard in second when Mister McGoldrick crashed out at the third fence, but Geraghty soon had him swinging along after Therealbandit turned up the pace a notch.

A bad mistake at the sixth knocked Kadarann tothree out.

Le Roi Miguel tried to make a race of it, but Mosclyer was a class above as he eased clear, passing the post 16 lengths in front to the cheers of the crowd.

Brian Kearney, Moscow Flyer's owner, told the BBC: ``Watching him in a race like this is stomach-churning, but at the same time magnificent, and I don't know how you separate the two as they are going on at the same time.

“He appears to be jumping better and better as he gets older, which is very encouraging for an old fellow like me!

“He is a kind of king in his own right. I go down and see him and he looks down at me and won’t go near me, but I think he knows who his owner is.”

Mrs Harrington added: “Barry said it is only now that he is becoming a nice ride. It has taken six years to get it right, but we are finally getting it right, and he was magnificent, better than he was at Cheltenham.

“We’ll take one race at a time. We’ll get over this one and hopefully we’ll have Punchestown in a couple of weeks’ time.”
