Schumacher leads after 30 laps in Spanish Grand Prix
Schumacher's lead had increased to just over seven seconds after 30 laps as he moved closer to a third victory in succession in Spain and a fifth overall.
The 34-year-old’s cause was helped with Alonso being forced to weave his way through both the Jordans and the Minardis, losing crucial time.
Barrichello also had to do the same as he retained third with Schumacher junior still fourth, Montoya fifth and Olivier Panis sixth for Toyota.
Button had obviously suffered some damage to his car, compromising his race pace as he dropped to 12th.
Schumacher dropped to fourth when he made his second pit-stop on lap 35 but moved back to third one lap later when Barrichello went into the pits.
The Swiss-based racer then had to slice his way past brother Ralf to take the lead after Alonso made his second trip to the Renault area of the pit-lane.
Alonso’s chase of Schumacher junior was held up by Firman with the Briton being given the one-finger salute as the Spaniard eventually got past.
The young charger regained second spot on lap 40 as he darted past Schumacher who went skidding into the gravel as a result though he managed to keep his Williams going before heading back to the pits.
