Sexton linked with move to Racing Metro14/01/2013 - 15:27:37
Ireland and Leinster flyhalf Jonathan Sexton may be on his way out of the province after this season with the Dubliner being linked with a move to French side Racing Metro.
French rugby publication Midi Olympique has claimed that Sexton twice met with Racing Metro’s billionaire owner Jacky Lorenzetti, but suggested that a deal could not be finalised before the Six Nations.
Sexton’s current contract with Leinster expires in June and having helped the eastern province secure three Heineken Cups over the last four years it comes as no surprise that foreign clubs would express an interest in the outside half.
Should he make the move to France, Sexton would be joining a wave of players switching to Top 14 rugby.
Big names such as Johnny Wilkinson, Matt Giteau, Lee Byrne, James Hook and Luke McAlister now ply their trade in France with Springboks winger Bryan Habana poised to join that list when he moves to Toulon next season.
Racing have already secured Juandre Kruger, Marc Andreu and Brian Mujati ahead of next season with Welsh duo Jamie Roberts and Dan Lydiate among their other targets.
In the past, big Irish names such as Brian O’Driscoll and Ronan O’Gara have been linked with moves to France while negotiating new contracts with the IRFU.
