Sammon set for Ireland debut

Striker Conor Sammon will be handed a chance to stake his claim for a role in the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifying campaign with a senior debut against Poland tonight.

The Derby frontman will partner Shane Long in attack in Giovanni Trapattoni’s much-changed side, which features only two of the men – John O’Shea and Glenn Whelan – who started a game at last summer’s Euro 2012 finals.

Southampton’s Artur Boruc starts for the Poles, who also include Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski in their line-up.

Rep of Ireland: Forde, McShane, O’Shea, Clark, Cunningham, Brady, McCarthy, Whelan, McClean, Long, Sammon.

Subs: Westwood, Ward, Doyle, Walters, Cox, Hendrick, Green, Andy Keogh, Hoolahan, Richard Keogh, Pearce, Henderson.

Poland: Boruc, Perquis, Glik, Boenisch, Wawrzyniak, Lukasik, Krychowiak, Blaszczykowski, Obraniak, Pawlowski, Lewandowski.
