WATCH: Mayo schoolkids belt out Ireland’s Call as gaeilge
The third and fourth class pupils of Scoil Phadráig in Westport came up with a novel way of combining support for the Ireland rugby team and Seachtain na Gaeilge - by learning to sing Ireland’s Call in Irish.
The song, written by Phil Coulter, is sung before Ireland's international Rugby Union fixtures to represent the whole island of Ireland.
Helped by teacher Ms Timlins, the children practised in class all week to learn the translated lyrics to Glaoch nd hÉireann (Ireland's Call).
“The children worked very hard to learn the lyrics 'as Gaeilge',” said Ms Timlins. “And obviously the melody was one they know very well already which made the process a lot easier!
“The pupils choreographed it with some simple but effective movements. A few props were added to make it a bit more fun and enjoyable!”
The video shows the class singing with Ireland's rugby highlights so far this year in the background.
They also helpfully added the lyrics in both English and Gaeilge on the video so the rest of us can learn to sing along.
Nicely done - just the thing to get us fired up for Saturday's game!
