It is the first time the competition has had a pre-decided destination for the final. John Feehan, CEO of PRO12 Rugby explained the decision to choose a venue for the final at today’s launch at the stadium.
Given the development of the competition the time is right for a showcase event”, he said. “We invited offers from all 12 clubs and their regions to host the Final. The tender from 'Team Belfast' was outstanding and was unanimously agreed as the chosen venue.”
Feehan continued: “Belfast excelled itself as the host city for our PRO12 season launch in 2013 and their plans for the City in the lead up to and around the Final are very exciting.
"We look forward to working with all our partners in staging a festival of rugby where fans from all four of our countries will enjoy a memorable Final and a great weekend in Belfast."
With the four Irish provinces currently occupying places three to six on the PRO12 table, a final based in Ireland adds still more incentive to fight for a place in the decider.
Osprey’s currently top the PRO12 table on 44 points, with Glasgow Warriors on the heels on 43 points and Leinster best of the Irish sides on 42 points.
