The player underwent a scan at the Aviva, but swelling made it difficult to assess the extent of the injury.
Leinster Rugby confirmed to breakingnews.ie today that the prognosis is better than initially feared and the player is expected to be out for four to six weeks.
McFadden is set to miss PRO12 fixtures against Zebre and Edinburgh in that time.
He will also have to sit out Leinster’s first games of the inaugural European Rugby Champions Cup, with the province set to meet Wasps and Castres during October in the pool stages.
