Ireland’s James Downey set to hang up his boots

Former Leinster, Munster and Connacht centre James Downey has announced that he will retire from rugby at the end of the season.

The Wasps' centre confirmed today that he will retire from to embark on a career in the financial world.

Downey, who was capped against Canada in 2013, enjoyed a 13-year career at the top level.

He played for the three Irish provinces, Calvisano and Glasgow, in addition to a five-year stint with Wasps' Aviva Premiership rivals Northampton.

Downey, 35, joined Wasps on loan from Glasgow early last year, before his contract was extended.

"I have really enjoyed every moment of being a professional player, and I have been lucky to have represented some great teams along the way," he said.

"I am one of the lucky ones who can finish on my own terms, not having it cut short like so many do.

"I've loved every minute along the way and been fortunate to have had a few successful years too, but now I am looking forward to starting the next chapter in my life."
