Ireland 'blessed' to have Schmidt, says Murray

Conor Murray says Ireland are "blessed" to have a coach like Joe Schmidt.

It comes after Ireland retained their Six Nations crown in an emotional finale that saw England fall six points short of denying them.

Ireland earlier managed to beat Scotland in Murrayfield 40-10, but had to endure a nervy couple of hours that saw France leak 55 points to the English in Twickenham.

But it was not enough for Stuart Lancaster's team, and amid the celebrations afterwards, Murray reflected on what has been a fantastic period for Irish rugby under Schmidt.

Murray said: "When Joe came in, we were all quite nervous about whether he'd like you as a player or whether you'd fit in with his style of play.

"As time went on, you knew how good he was, it was just taking time to get used to his game plan, but the information he gives you is so clear, and so accurate.

"He studies the game so unbelievably hard and he knows it inside out, so we're blessed to have a coach like him."

The Munster scrum half recognised the contribution Schmidt has made to his own progress as a player also.

Murray said: "He's been unbelievable for me since he came in, he challenges players to improve and get better and if you don't do the work and you're not showing it in training, he'll talk to you and give you advice on what you should be working on.

"From the moment he came in, he gave me a few little pointers on my game, and he's improved me as a player, definitely."
