Ireland's forwards coach Simon Easterby has said Ireland value performance levels over a potential seventh consecutive victory.
Ireland will face Australia in Dublin on Saturday without Jared Payne after he failed to recover from his foot sprain.
The 29-year-old was unable to battle back to trainingtoday, and will now miss Ireland’s final autumn contest, with Schmidt’s men chasing a clean November series sweep.
The Ulster centre’s absence paves the way for boss Joe Schmidt to pair Gordon D’Arcy and Robbie Henshaw to face the Wallabies.
“I think the performance is first and foremost,” said Easterby.
“You get the performance right, then you get your processes right, and you get results out of the back of that.
“Is it important to us to get a clean sweep? Not really.
“Is it important to us to keep improving and keep getting better as a team and players? Yes, and that’s first and foremost.
“Continual improvement is the most important thing.”
