Bad news for Cork hurling as Sweetnam commits to rugby

Darren Sweetnam has committed his future to Munster rugby, putting paid to any hopes of him returning to his inter-county hurling career with Cork.

Munster confirmed today that the Greencore Academy player had signed a two-year contract, moving to development status for 2015/2016 and a full contract for 2016/2017.

The winger has made 7 Munster 'A' appearances in the British and Irish Cup, and has also represented Ireland at U20s level.

The 21-year-old, a Dunmanway native, had previously played in midfield for Cork. He made his debut with the senior team in the 2012 Waterford Crystal Cup and included in the National League and Championship teams that season, making four appearances.

His deal was confirmed along with other contract signings today, and include the return of another former hurler, Tomas O’Leary, to the province.
