Walsh named Sportswoman of Month

Jockey Katie Walsh with her father Ted after the John Smith's Grand National Chase at Aintree last month

Top jockey Katie Walsh has been named The Irish Times / Irish Sports Council Sportswoman of the Month for April.

It follows her remarkable third place finish in this year's Grand National which was the highest ever finish by a female jockey.

The Kildare native made her debut in the race aboard Seabass and made the Aintree record books beating off competition from Nina Carberry.

It is the 27-year-old's second time to win a Sportswoman of the Month, award and she will battle it out against the other monthly winners in December 2012 for the overall Sportswoman of the Year title.
