Timeless Call takes victory in Cork

Timeless Call secured the second Listed success of her career in the Midsummer Sprint Stakes at Cork.

The Reginald Roberts-trained mare was always in a nice position in the hands of Pat Smullen, whose companion jousted with An Saighdiur for a long way in the five-furlong dash.

Timeless Call won that battle a furlong and a half from home and quickly stamped her authority on proceedings towards the near-side rail.

Jamesie gave chase late on, but he could not find the acceleration to get by the 8-1 scorer, who seized the day by half a length.

British challenger Eton Rifles, the 2-1 favourite, failed to show his true form.

Venus De Milo emphatically returned to form in the Munster Oaks.

Last season's Irish and Yorkshire Oaks runner-up was well beaten in the Saval Beg Stakes at Leopardstown on his return to action nine days ago.

Suitably energised by that pipe-opener, it all came together nicely in this Group Three over a mile and a half.

Joseph O'Brien played a cute waiting game aboard Venus De Milo, who was held up alongside Edelmira, the disappointing 6-4 favourite, as Dazzling and Cristal Fashion took the field along.

O'Brien's partner made striking gains at the top of the home straight and galloped strongly into the lead a furlong and a half from home.

Venus De Milo (5-2) determinedly stuck to his guns on the far rail to convincingly account for stablemate Dazzling.

Joseph O'Brien said: "She wants very quick ground and ground is a big thing to her.

"She still looked a bit heavy today but she did it well and it was nice to get a win with her.

"She might step back into Group One company now over a mile and a half on fast ground."
