Thursday meet at Brighton called off

Thursday's meeting at Brighton has been abandoned due to a waterlogged track and false patches of ground.

Course officials were forced to make an early call after 8.7 inches of rain fell in the last 21 days.

With another inch of rain forecast, the situation was declared untenable.

Clerk of the course Ed Arkell said: "There are areas around the six-furlong mark that are not currently raceable.

"There is up to another inch of rain forecast which is no help whatsoever and we just thought it would be prudent to call it off before anyone declares.

"We've had about eight inches of rain in three weeks and it is just ridiculous."
