Recent Dundalk winner Smuggler’s Cove is set for a rise in class in the Racing Post Trophy later this month.
The Fastnet Rock colt has won both his starts since a fifth-placed finish on his debut, picking up Listed honours under the floodlights on Friday night in the Star Appeal Stakes over seven furlongs. Prior to that he had won a maiden at Listowel.
O’Brien said: “He won very well at Dundalk and is a very nice horse. He’ll probably go for the Racing Post Trophy. A lot of our entries in that race will be left off for the year.”
O’Brien will be in search of his eighth Racing Post Trophy success, his last having been with Kingsbarns in 2012.
Ballydoyle luminaries such as High Chaparral, Camelot and the late St Nicholas Abbey have all won the Doncaster showpiece.
