Navan and Kelso get go-ahead, frost claims Fakenham

This afternoon’s meetings at Navan and Kelso go ahead after both tracks passed precautionary inspections.

Officials at Navan had been concerned by the threat of overnight frost but the track is reported to be fit for racing this morning.

The going is heavy.

Clerk of the course at Kelso Hazel Peplinski had planned to check conditions at 8am but was able to give this afternoon's meeting the thumbs up earlier than planned.

She tweeted: “No frost in the groundKelsoRacecourse – racing goes ahead.”

Today’s meeting at Fakenham has been abandoned due to a frozen track.

Clerk of the course David Hunter called an initial inspection for 8am but decided a further check was needed at 10am.

However, he opted to call off the meeting shortly before that inspection as conditions had not improved.

He said: “I’m afraid we’ve had to abandon. There’s been no improvement in the last two hours and the air temperature actually dropped again at around 9.30am.

“We have seen no improvement and we have called it off.”

Monday’s meeting at Plumpton is subject to an 8am inspection due to the threat overnight frost and snow.

Clerk of the course Mark Cornford reports the track to be raceable at present but feels it prudent to check conditions in the morning with a cold night in prospect.

He said: “It’s very positive at the moment and we do have the covers down.

“We are raceable as we stand, we had 10 millimetres of rain yesterday and then a dry night and it is dry this morning.

“We are forecast minus 1C overnight and then 4C by early afternoon, it’s just the weather is so unpredictable.

“There’s the possibility of some snow showers overnight and I just don’t want to get caught out in the morning.”
