McCririck hoping for track return today: Agent

Racing pundit John McCririck hopes to return to racing at Cheltenham later today after being detained in Cheltenham General Hospital overnight, his agent said.

McCririck complained of feeling unwell during the first day of the Cheltenham Festival yesterday and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Speaking on course, a friend of McCririck’s said: “John felt unwell at the races and will be kept in overnight for assessment.”

A spokesperson for Cheltenham General Hospital said: “We are aware that John McCririck has been admitted and his condition is stable.”

His agent later said: “John fully intends on being back on the course tomorrow.”

Speaking to The Guardian, McCririck said: “I didn’t collapse, as some people have said, but I felt all faint and woozy. I couldn’t stand and I started fainting, so they carted me in here and are doing all sorts of tests.”

McCririck, 72, has long been the face of British racing on television but in January he declared his intention to launch a £3million legal action against Channel 4 and its new racing production company after he was dropped from its coverage, which is now responsible for all terrestrial racing in Britain following the withdrawal of the BBC.

McCririck claimed he was a victim of age discrimination.

A larger-than-life character, he has also featured on Celebrity Big Brother and works regularly for At The Races.
