The annual pilgrimage to the iconic West of Ireland track is the highlight of the summer racing circuit and is a massive tourist attraction.

The seven day extravaganza begins next Monday with massive prize money available for both the Galway Plate and Galway Hurdle.

Dermot Weld has been dubbed the ‘King of Ballybrit’ and his horses will be well supported by punters throughout the week.

The Galway Plate is the highlight of the week and is always a fiercely competitive handicap and was won by the Noel Meath trained Road To Riches last summer.

Leading owners JP McManus and Michael O’Leary always target the ‘Plate’ and are sure to have a number of runners competing in the race.

Over 150,000 people will go through the turnstiles and 1.8m is available in prize money. The winner of the Galway Hurdle will receive €300,000 which makes it the richest national hunt race in this country.

Ladies day coincides with the Galway Hurdle which attracts the biggest crowd of the week while politicians, celebrities and sports stars all like to take a punt out west.
