Premiership footballer on drink-drive charge

21/11/2005 - 08:34:44
Premiership footballer El Hadji Diouf is due to appear in court today on a drink-drive charge.

The £3.5m (€5m) Bolton Wanderers striker was stopped by police in his black Mercedes 4x4 in Blackburn on November 1.

The controversial Senegalese player, who has twice served football bans for spitting, was given a roadside breath test then taken to a local police station where he was questioned and charged with drink driving.

Diouf, thought to earn around £30,000 (€43,690) a week, had played in a Premiership game in London against Charlton Athletic hours before and the team then flew back to Manchester after their 1-0 victory.

Diouf is due to appear at Bolton Magistrates’ Court later today.
