Positive updates for Lacey and Brogan
Donegal's All-Ireland winning centre back Karl Lacey is poised to return to action for Jim McGuinness' side towards the end of the month.
Lacey is a few weeks away from making his seasonal debut for the reigning Ulster and All-Ireland champions, and could be targeting the Allianz League clash with Kildare on Sunday, March 24 as a possible return date.
The 2012 Footballer of the Year underwent hip surgery in December and his recovery is going 'very well at the moment' according to Donegal assistant manager Rory Gallagher.
"It has been very encouraging. The way Karl's rehab is progressing, we would be hopeful that Karl will be back playing again towards the end of March," Gallagher told the Irish News.
"That was the time scale put in place by the specialist he is working with when he had the surgery and Karl is where he hoped he would be with the rehab work.
"We would be hopeful that he will be back out on the field towards the latter rounds of the National League and, at the moment, we are looking at the end of the month. If he was in a position to be back before the end of the league, that would be a bonus."
Meanwhile, Lacey's predecessor as Footballer of the Year, Alan Brogan, is also making good strides with his own return from injury.
Brogan has not played for Dublin since last year's All-Ireland semi-final loss to Mayo. He was sidelined for the start of the current season after undergoing an operation on a long-term osteitis pubis injury.
Like Lacey, the play-making forward is hoping to get back playing in the latter stages of the Allianz League.
Commenting on Brogan, Dubs boss Jim Gavin said: "Alan is progressing well, and was back in with us on Tuesday night and trained well. He is a good bit off but we’ll take it week by week - it is looking positive."
Gavin has been boosted by the return of Bryan Cullen to the squad for tonight's Croke Park clash with Mayo. The 2011 All-Ireland winning captain got married to Cork sprinting star Ailis McSweeney in January and recently returned to full training.
Cullen is listed as one of the substitutes for the Mayo match, and Gavin says the Skerries native has put in 'an awful lot of hard work' since linking up with the new-look panel.
